Young Scots band, The Rooks, released their debut single last weekend (May 3).

The track, titled “Lay Me Down”, was released after the Glasgow-based five-piece travelled down to London to work with the award-winning producer, Jim Lowe.

So far, the reaction from fans has been “the best possible,” according to the groups lead singer Ross Gardiner. This comes after the songs launch party, which was held at Van Winkle, sold out within 24 hours.

Speaking about the event, Kieran Luddy, the bands bass guitarist told Blether: “It went well, it was packed [and had] a good atmosphere. We’ve gathered this following without even releasing music, it was nice to appreciate that. It felt like a nice start… because it’s only the beginning.”

Since forming in high school, The Rooks have made a name for themselves within Glasgow’s music scene, playing at venues such as King Tuts and SWG3’s Galvanizers

However, the band have waited to release music of their own, “we’ve been going for quite a while and been making music for so long, but I think we were quite keen to release something we were actually happy with,” the bassist explained.

“There was no illusion when we were writing [Lay Me Down], that this was the first bit of material we made that we were properly proud of putting out,” he continued.

Matthew McFayden, the groups rhythm guitarist, added: “It’s mature. It’s got enough moving parts, everything weaves well. We’re starting to realize how we should sound, why we should sound that way and focus ourselves in on that sound.”
