What’s Your (Meal) Deal?

Earlier this month, Blether reported on the Scottish Government’s plans to take unhealthy options away from everybody’s favourite lunch – the meal deal.

Before these changes come into effect, we decided to rank our top three supermarket meal deals so that you don’t have to.
Marks and Spencer (M&S)

If you are feeling a little bit bougie, treating yourself to an M&S meal deal is the way to go. If perusing around one of their food halls doesn’t excite you enough, having the option of a mini colin the caterpillar in your meal deal should.

The luxurious selection available at M&S bagged them a spot on our list. As well as a plethora of mains, they also offer a vast selection of own-brand snacks and drinks – rather than the usual basic branded items you see everywhere else.

If it wasn’t obvious enough, the price of Marks and Spencer’s is their biggest downfall. That, and the fact meal deals are only available at selected stores – wtf. At £5.50, its giving more celebratory lunch rather than grab and go. However, with one of their scrumptious mains costing around £4.25 individually, we feel like their meal deal is a bargain you cannot refuse.
Sainsbury’s

In second place is the most underrated meal deal of them all. With chicken nuggets and store-baked goods, the choice at Sainsbury’s is like no other. Along with the usual suspects, the chain also offers fresh pastries, hot food, and costa coffee as part of their meal deal. Although the supermarkets sandwich quality may not be as good as their rivals, their wide selection allows meal deal lovers to switch up their regular lunch for something a bit funkier.

With an abundance of stores in Scotland’s city centres, Sainsbury’s also benefit from their location – who doesn’t crave a convenient meal deal on a busy day, especially when it only costs £3.50.
Tesco

Surprise, surprise - Tesco has made our number one spot! Despite the recent price controversy – forcing us all to get a Clubcard – Tesco consistently delivers in the meal deal department. With delicious mains, as well as our favourite snacks and drinks from much loved brands, what’s not to love?

Although we were all left frustrated when Tesco increased the price of their iconic £3 deal, the supermarket still provides us with an affordable option. At just £3.40, Tesco’s meal deal is the cheapest on our list – if you have a Clubcard that is. For those without, this classic lunch is definitely worth the extra 50p.
